John Kampfner – Why the Germans Do it Better

Of course our dearest John Owen has a great recommendation for us as well! Here’s #18:

The title of John Kampfner’s book is carefully chosen. He has enough experience of ’schland to know that the Germans don’t do it perfectly and his ‚better’ essentially refers to Britain, which we all know isn’t especially hard these days.

Nonetheless, this is an excellent book on modern Germany whose central, comforting argument is that things in the Federal Republic could be a lot, lot worse. A book for expats to passively aggressively give their parents or for Germans who, after 2020, are in need of the Gemütlichkeit of smugness over the festive season!
